Using the links/resources presented this week (plus your own web search), identify one physical change of aging and discuss the implications of that age-related change on the overall functioning of the family unit. Place particular emphasis on how this age-related change may impact individual family members. Include how you would collaborate with medical professionals.
The APA (2013) writes that hearing impairment is very common in older adults. 50% of adults over 75 have some hearing impairment and almost 25% of adults between 65 and 75 have some form of hearing loss. This can impact the entire family system. During family dinners, especially big gatherings that are very nosy, the elder adult that is experiencing hearing loss may have trouble following the conversation. My wife’s grandmother, who is 90, is in great health but she suffers from hearing loss. Because of this she refuses to join family gatherings as it is so overwhelming to her. Instead, the family instituted that we should go visit her on an individual basis as this will allow her to follow the conversation and interact with her family without getting overwhelmed.
Other implications may be certain family activities that are dependent on hearing may have to be changed or reinvented. If the family enjoyed going to the movies together, the elder adult who is suffering from hearing loss may become frustrated. Also, the hearing loss may cause arguments between family members, as the elder adult thinks someone said something or did not hear correctly. This may lead to much tension between family members and strain the family system. The National Institute on Deafness and Other communication Disorders [NIDCD] (2022) writes that family members have to work together and help the elderly adult that is struggling with hearing loss. Facing the elderly adult when talking and talking in a loud tone (but not shouting) may be helpful. Have family members talk clearly but not slowly is also helpful (NIDCD, 2022).
This issue of hearing loss can really strain the relationships between the adult who has the hearing loss and his/her spouse and children. The children may begin to treat their parent as someone who needs to be taken care of and is helpless. This may affect the dignity and self-esteem of the parent. The parent was always the protector and the provider, the rock who is always there for their children and with the hearing loss, there may be a shift based on the perception that the parent is not as able anymore. The hearing loss can also affect the spouse as communication and interactions may have shift and relearned. This may be a frustrating process that may create tension in their relationship.
The NIDCD (2022) write that the adult can see an otolaryngologist (ENT for short) who can help diagnose the issue and send you to an audiologist to help you get a hearing aid. Learning how to lip read or speech read may also be beneficial. There are also other assistive listening devices that can help the adult that is struggling talk on the phone. This can help him connect to family members with technology even when they are far away. Working together with medical professionals can help the client recognize the greatest struggles and tension on the family system and what approach to help alleviate the hearing loss will help lessen the tension on the family system.
