Understanding how to respond and lead appropriately in situations that affect an organization can be challenging. Your preferred leadership style provides a path forward, but is it always the best path for your staff? Being an effective manager involves connecting with and motivating others, as well as knowing how to lead the way others want to be led. Sometimes that means adapting or flexing your style to bring out the best in your team.
In this Discussion, you consider how to assess your staff’s preferred leadership style and how the results might impact your leadership.

To prepare:
Review the Learning Resources on leadership style and traits. Take the Leadership Styles Questionnaire in the course text to determine your preferred leadership style.
With your preferred leadership style in mind, consider the leadership style you least identify with. If a situation called for it, how would you integrate an attribute of that style into your leadership?
Determine how you would discover the leadership style that your staff prefers.

Post an analysis of how different leadership styles can be beneficial. Select the leadership style that you least identify with and describe one positive attribute of this style. How might you integrate this attribute into your leadership?
Then, explain how you would learn about the needs of your team and the leadership style they prefer to work under. Based on what you learn, to what extent would you adapt your leadership style?

Post an analysis of how different leadership styles can be beneficial.
The various leadership philosophies have certain advantages. You may have a significant beneficial influence on a place by using the appropriate leadership approach. It will lower turnover, enable personnel to be more effective, and boost morale generally. When leaders set a good example for their followers, it fosters confidence and a supportive workplace. Understanding the various strategies may make leaders more effective by providing them with insight into how and why they act in the ways that they do as well as by assisting them in determining when and where to change their approach. The leadership skills approach considers the knowledge and skills possessed by the leader. A leader can develop specific abilities and become an exceptional one. For many years, researchers have been looking at leadership traits and qualities. (Northouse, 2020)
Select the leadership style that you least identify with and describe one positive attribute of this style.
I would say the one style I identify with the least would be the Authoritarian Style. Visionary is a term frequently used to describe authoritative leaders. Those who embrace this leadership style see themselves as mentors to their followers. A follow-me attitude is emphasized by authoritative leadership, which is distinct from authoritarian leadership. By doing this, leaders set an example for others around them and motivate people to follow. One positive to this style is the authoritative leadership style depends greatly on developing a rapport with each member of the team. This enables a leader to offer advice and criticism on a more individualized basis, assisting others in succeeding. This may be advantageous given the opportunity to get to know each member better, but I don’t think I could play that part and feel at ease. Being very hands-on is a hallmark of authoritative leadership, but leaders must be careful not to micromanage. There is a propensity with this technique that might overwhelm team members and foster unfavorable feelings. (Felicity, & Price-Dowd, 2020)
How might you integrate this attribute into your leadership?
One form of leadership that may be quite effective in some circumstances is authoritative leadership. An emotionally intelligent mindset that has been fully matured is essential for authoritative leadership. Effective authoritative leaders must exhibit certain emotional intelligence skills including flexibility, empathy, and self-assurance. This would work efficiently in a military setting because of the stress level and not having to think as much puts more focus on the mission and less on the soldier. I would use this approach from a place of empathy for the authoritative leadership style to be effective. An authoritative leader is better able to spot possible performance barriers and eliminate them while also motivating achievement if they have a thorough awareness of the team member’s personal and professional feelings, aspirations, and fears. (Northouse, 2020)

You must recognize the need for adaptability before you can modify your leadership style. Is the style I am using the most effective? Also, you need to shift your perspective and get ready for change. Would this adjustment assist the team more or the objective? You must select the leadership approach that is most suited to the situation. You might need to take control of the issue to get things done if you want things to be more manageable because time is often of the utmost importance. It’s time to adjust to brand-new circumstances now. You can now see the problem clearly, but the strategy you are using is useless, therefore you must change it. (Thanh, & Quang, 2022). Based on what I learned, your leadership approach needs to change to fit the circumstances. Since nothing will always work in your favor, you must adjust your priorities as necessary. Although there is no one size fits all approach to leadership, it is generally accepted that everyone has a preferred approach or leadership strength. A good leader, however, will alter their style based on the scenario and utilize a strategy that will impact a favorable outcome. (Valldeneu, et al, 2021)

Select the leadership style that you least identify with and describe one positive attribute of this style. How might you integrate this attribute into your leadership?
I least identify with authoritarian leadership. Northhouse (2020) states that authoritarian leadership styles may be linked to similar or encouraging personality factors. I do not identify as being authoritative in my personal or professional life. One positive attribute of this style is that authoritative leaders give clarity and direction (Northouse, 2020). I could integrate this into my leadership by practicing consistency and simplicity. I often over-complicate and over-think things, which I find can confuse or mislead those receiving my instructions. I also tend to respond better to authoritarian leaders because I need simple and direct instruction to not be confused or misled myself.

According to Northouse (2020), different leadership styles work best for different environments. For example, fast-paced working environments, such as hospital emergency rooms, work best with authoritative leadership. More creative fields could benefit from democratic or laissez-faire leadership styles because it gives employees more freedom to think for themselves and opens them up to more creative opportunities. Depending on the environment is one way to learn what a team needs as far as leadership style. Another way to determine the needs of a team would be to conduct leadership satisfaction surveys with questions on employee preferences, opinions, and levels of satisfaction (Asghar & Oino, 2018).
I would adapt my leadership style as much as I could to provide my team with the leadership they need to be satisfied, motivated, and effective. I would assess my leadership traits and consider realistic accommodations. For example, I possess leadership traits such as charisma, intelligence, sociability, and integrity, but I would have to figure out ways to compensate for my lack of confidence, determination (Northouse, 2020). By comparing the needs of my team and my own capabilities, I would adapt my leadership styles to the best of my ability for the team’s best interests.
