As we have discussed, EUH 2001 revolves around this middle unit of the course on the “isms” that emerge in the 19th century. Here’s that list again
Liberalism and Conservatism
Nationalism and Romanticism
Industrialism and Urbanism
Socialism and Marxism
Imperialism and Social Darwinism
We have discussed or done an assignment on many of these already. However, by the end of the 19th century, the key challenge that was emerging was between the ideas of Liberalism and those of Socialism. To me, at the core of the debate around the “isms” is this key question: this deep question about liberty vs economic equity.
At the heart of socialism is a desire for economic equity. It is critical that you place that phrase in context of the European setting where we find our class. We aren’t worried (yet) about whether its fair or not that you can’t afford season passes to Universal and some rich person you know can have those passes AND season tickets to the Magic. We are, rather, talking about a location whose history is wrapped up in peasantry, which goes much further back to the decline of the Roman Empire in the 400s..
So, our discussion deals with this question: which is more important to you—individual liberty (the concepts from English constitutionalism, classic liberalism) or economic equity (the concerns of socialism)?
Obviously explain why for your position. Bring in the background of both Liberalism and Socialism (be clear to always remember these are ideas in competition). It is useful for you to also bring in some of the facts or information about the creation of Socialism, both Marx but more importantly the thinkers BEFORE Marx. But then you also want to express how socialism is as much a response to Liberalism, in concert with industrialism.
I will argue for the opposite of the side that is chosen. The replies from the original poster or classmates must DEFEND THE ORIGINAL POSITION with new sources.
