Paper Assignment Two: The Abstract (aka, the Research Paper Proposal)
An abstract is a condensed summary of a text that has been or will be written. In general, scholars write two types of abstracts. The first is the abstract that summarizes the article that accompanies it. Almost all scholarly journals provide this type of abstract along with the articles they publish.
The second type of abstract is a proposal of a paper that the scholar would like to present at an academic conferenceor submit to a collection of essays; this type of abstract is ordinarily a response to a call for papers (CFP). The submitted abstracts are judged largely based on whether they state an argument that is clearly relevant to current research in their field. This second type is what you will write for your second paper, which is also your proposal for your final research paper. (See the research paper assignment for the full details of the essay you will be proposing.)
The key to writing a strong abstract is being familiar enough with the research on the topic that you can propose a clear argument.
Submit an abstract of no more than 250 words on Blackboard before class on March 2.

Grading:
Abstracts that get accepted to conferences state a clear thesis argument and provide enough detail to show how the proposed paper contributes to the scholarship on the topic. Such abstracts will earn a grade of A.
Abstracts that may get accepted to conferences state what the paper will do and suggest how the paper contributes to the scholarship on the topic. Such abstracts will earn a grade of B.
Abstracts that state a clear focus but may be vague about the paper’s argument or contribution to the scholarship on the topic will earn a grade of C.
Abstracts that are unclear or too vague will earn a grade of D or F.
Note that abstracts that are poorly written or surface errors (spelling, grammar, usage) will receive lower grades than described above.
