You have been asked to design and teach an American Literature course that must include texts written by Black American writers. You know there are several texts from which to choose. The problem is that the chair of the department has limited you to teaching only three texts by Black American writers in this course. Given these parameters stated above, please write where you discuss why anyone interested in African American Literature should read the three texts you have selected using the parameters stated above (one text written during the slave period through the Harlem Renaissance and two texts written from the protest literature period of the late 1930s to the present). Consider what students will learn by reading the three texts you identify and analyze in this paper.

It is easier, if you focus your discussion on one or two themes addressed in the three texts you choose to write about for the essay. The three texts must be selected from readings assigned for this class. Refer to the syllabus and read the introduction to the various periods in the Norton Anthology of African American Literature. For instance, you may want students to learn about what three of the texts reveal about violence in the United States directed at African Americans. Maybe you want to write about what the three texts you choose reveal about the difference between Black feminism and mainstream feminism. You could write about the strategies Black Americans have used to affect social and political change in order to uplift the Black community. Perhaps you want to discuss what the three texts reveal about Black Pride or the dangers of internalizing racism. You might want to focus on what the texts reveal about Black masculinity or the intersectionality of race, class, and gender. Maybe you focus on what the texts reveal regarding race as a social construct with real consequences for those racialized as Black in a society where the anti-Black sentiment is prevalent. You could write about what the texts reveal about Black love and the importance of family and community. I could go on, but I will stop here. I have suggested a few possible points of focus for this assignment. Feel free to use any of these suggestions or come up with your own but stay within the parameters outlined above.
