This assignment requires that you drive, walk, or take a bus through a
community unfamiliar to you. Look at the environment and note how
it is similar and different from the community in which you grew up or
currently live. You are required to interview several people who live
or work in the community you select as your study community. This
part of the assignment can be done in groups.
To the best of your ability, answer the following questions about your
community. You are to write a 750-1000 word reflective essay on
your experience doing this assignment and address some some of the
below questions.
 Define the term community. What kind of community is your
study community? Are they metropolitan or small communities
(e.g., a city, small town, bedroom, rural, reservation)?
 What is the population size and density of your community and
the community you visited (use most recent U.S. Census data)
 How heterogeneous is the community with respect to residents’
socioeconomic status, racial and ethnic background, and age
range? Use census data. To what extent do you see diversity
(ethnic restaurants, represented denominations such as Muslim
Mosques, Chinese-Baptist Church, Polish-American Fraternal
Societies, gay bars, senior community centers etc?)
 General impressions-how would you describe the community
you visited in terms of its basic characteristics(e.g., comfortable,
poor, middle-class, crowded)
 What kinds of billboards, signs, or graffiti do you see? Are there
small markets or large superstores. Fast food outlets, liquor
stores. What is the general condition of the business district?
(thriving, boarded up, dirty and littered, sparkling etc.)
 Does the community have safety institutions such as police
department, fire department, or neighborhood watch program?
What does this imply about the community? If there is a
community policing station, you can inquire about crime in the
area.
 Does the community have public parks or recreational centers?
Observation: Who uses the parks? What does this imply about
the community?
 What health and social service facilities exist in this community
or neighborhood? Walk in and observe a waiting room. Pick up
brochures. What languages are spoken? What written signs do
you see?
 Churches and schools. What denominations and affiliations are
represented? Comment on the school’s general appearance and
condition. How do the schools in this community rank or rate?
You will need to know the name of the schools to get specific
data.
 Show pictures of your community tour ( you do not have to print
them you can take them on your phone or tablet) and bring a
couple to class with you to share with your group
