Whether in business, sports, politics, and just about any other field, the highest performing organizations are often those that work effectively as a team. Individual skills, initiative, and talent are important, but often not enough for organizational success.
For this paper, you are expected to read a book that describes how some team worked together. Below are some examples from a variety of fields. Feel free to choose one of these, or any other book on a successful team. (And yes, it must be a book – watching the movie “Miracle” or “Ocean’s Eleven” five times is not the same as reading a book.)
The Boys in the Boat by Daniel Brown. Describes the 1936 Olympic Gold Medal rowing team.
Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Describes President Lincoln’s cabinet.
The Soul of a New Machine by Tracy Kidder. Describes the development of a computer.
The Last Place on Earth by Roland Huntford. Describes the quest to be the first to reach the South Pole.
The focus of the paper should be on describing how the successes (and failures?) of a team described in the book can be explained by concepts described in the text book – particularly, but not necessarily exclusively, the chapters on groups and teamwork. Be sure to describe how particular “scenes” from the book fit with particular concepts from the text book, and be certain to cite the specific page(s) of the book that contain the “scenes” and the pages of the text book that describe the associated concepts.
This paper should be around 1800-2500 words, with proper referencing of all sources used. I recommend using the APA format for the paper and references, although I am not a stickler for following every detail of the official formating guidelines. The library or the writing center can provide assistance if you have any questions.
