You-The Self-Sufficient Reader
ENG 1022
25 points
Overview: Reading is a skill that is often taken for granted in college, even though many of us struggle with it in one way or another. In Module 2, we have been working on developing reading strategies that will help you become a stronger, more independent reader. To conclude this module, I would like for you to show me how you are becoming a more self-sufficient reader.
Directions:
This assignment has two parts. Please complete both and upload to Assignments as a Word Doc.
Part I.
After closely reading “The Banking Concept” please write a summary of the text. Within this summary, show you know how to integrate a quote sandwich, complete with an in-text citation. Include a Work Cited at the end.
Part II.
Please write three paragraphs explaining what reading strategies you have attempted, which strategies worked best, which strategies weren’t as effective, how you have approached the different “types” of texts differently, what you have learned about yourself as a reader, and how you might use these strategies in future reading assignments. Are there any adjustments you need to make? Lastly, what are you still working on as a reader?
Please use these questions to help you focus your development:
Describe yourself as a reader before we performed our reading experiment. Then, describe yourself now. What new strategies have you discovered are the most useful to you?
How has this module changed how you feel about yourself as a reader? Are you more confident than you were before, especially with texts in which you are not part of the intended audience?
How much time have you learned you need to set aside for reading assignments? Where do you read best? What do you need to do to help comprehend a text?
In a hypothetical situation to get us thinking about how your reading skills might transfer to new situations, pretend that you are in a sociology class and you were just assigned a reading assignment–a journal article. You are not the intended audience of the journal article. What do you do?

Part I:
In his piece titled “How to Turn Republicans and Democrats into Americans,” Mickey Edwards argues that the two-party system of the United States has become unhealthy to our democracy. He states that “the division between parties has created a ‘war’ on the congressional floor” in which members are more concerned with their affiliation than the community members they were elected to represent (Edwards 25). Early on he addresses the counter-argument that American democracy was built around a party system by retorting that the Founding Fathers belonged to groups with similar political leanings; however, originally the country did not have the strict division of groups that we see in modern politics. Now a member of a party is expected to take a strong stance in favor of the views the party represents and against those the party rejects. Because of this adamant refusal to have more flexible political standings, it has made a system in which members are fearful to question each other. Another position that Edwards argues is that it is” harmful to partisan commissions to assign congressional districts, as it further separates the people being elected from the people they represent” (Edwards 40). He uses the example of his own district, which elected him despite its democratic leaning, and how after the commission redrew his district to make a democratic congressman more likely to be elected his new district included many groups of people he wasn’t equipped to represent. The Democrats had put a desire for stronger legislative potential in front of the ability for the people in those communities to be accurately represented, which is very harmful to them. Throughout the writing, the unifying theme is that it is harmful to democracy to draw a hard line in the sand between political parties, expect members to adhere to their party’s will, and make it difficult for citizens to elect members based on their skills and merits instead of their political affiliation. Edwards argues this point using a statement-solution structure, framing the issue using anecdotes and analysis, then suggesting what he sees as a possible solution to it (Edwards).
Part 2:
I have learned a lot about reading. Since English is not my first language, I was nervous about the amount of reading in my college classes. However, through this reading experiment, I found that annotating and looking up words really helps. For example, when we read the Freire article at first I couldn’t understand any of it. But then I just underlined the parts that I could understand and I wrote notes in the margins. In class, I realized that I kind of did get what he was saying and I even had highlighted some parts we used for our quote sandwiches.
Mostly, reading just takes time. It also helps me to know about the author before I start reading. One of the new things I learned was how to read a journal article. If I were in another class and were going to read a journal article that is not intended for me, I would try to apply some skills I have learned from past readings. I would probably start from the abstract to kind of grasp what the reading is about. I feel like I would still try to skim through introduction, main parts and conclusion. After, I think it is easier to read all the section headings to know how the article is designed, whether there are methods, experiments, analysis or discussions. And then maybe start reading the whole thing. Often there are some words or sentences that are difficult to understand, so highlighting them or marking is very helpful for me. Reading the whole article can take a very long time sometimes, so I try to take breaks in between to kind of go back and see what I have been reading about by asking questions that may help.
Also, I learned that for me the surrounding situation is very important. I have tried listening to music when I read, sometimes it helps sometimes it is a little distracting. If I don’t really focus, I tend to read some parts over and over again, spending more time than I need to. To focus it kind of needs to be a quiet and comfortable place to read, whether it is at home, school, or library. Also, what works for me particularly is to read in the evenings when it’s quieter and still. I never usually read in the mornings because I tend to get distracted easily. One more thing is that reading journal articles is not the most fun thing to do, so when reading, it helps to try being curious about the topic and maybe do a little bit of research.
