1.There are two different forms of plagiarism, and the punishments directed toward the two should be adjusted based on intentional or unintentional conditions.
Unintentional plagiarism, or the improper use of sources and citations, is ” the accidental appropriation of the ideas and materials of others due to a lack of understanding of the conventions of citation and documentation” (Plagiarism: What is it? 2021). Students often need help learning to format in APA and MLA properly, leading to unintentional plagiarism because of a lack of citations or the incorrect formatting of sources. A student should not be punished for lacking understanding but instead led in the direction to help them understand their errors and learn how to give authors credit where it is owed correctly. Unintentional plagiarism results from a lack of understanding or through accidental misuse, not necessarily intended to cheat or steal another’s work or idea.
On the contrary, intentional plagiarism should be punished accordingly, as the desire to cheat and steal someone’s work is made clear. According to Simon et al. (2008), plagiarism is the “appropriation or imitation of another author’s language, ideas, and thoughts, and representation of them as one’s original work” (Simon et al., 2008). Intentional plagiarism jeopardizes the validity of the work and the integrity of the individual. The difference between Intentional and unintentional plagiarism is the knowledge and understanding of cheating. One does it without experience, and the other is made through full awareness and understanding of their actions and intentions. Individuals who intentionally use someone’s else work to pass off as their own went in with the purpose or desire to steal their work without making any effort to complete their own work. This is commonly seen through coursework in colleges and universities. When the level of responsibility and workload increases, the probability of plagiarism increases. This is usually the result of stress, excessive workload, laziness, or wanting to breeze through school. Consequences include suspension, expulsion, and the revocation of one’s degree, license, or certification. This is not limited to academics only. Plagiarism can also occur in the workforce, and disciplinary actions include but are limited to reprimanding the individual or releasing one from their job duties.
2.Personally, I agree with the statement mentioned in the prompt. Much like any other scenario, the severity of one’s actions should be the basis of determining their punishment. Plagiarism is no different, as the intent behind a plagiarizing incident should be a factor in the magnitude of the consequences faced by the individual.
Intentional plagiarism is defined as an instance of plagiarism in which an individual is purposefully branding themselves as an author of the exact materials obtained from a different source. Some examples of this form of plagiarism can include: purchasing written essays, branding an individual’s unpublished materials as one’s own, and formulating made-up citations (Jackson State Community College, 2023). Considering the intent behind intentional plagiarism, in addition to awareness of the possible consequences of partaking in academic dishonesty, I believe intentional plagiarism should be punished more severely than unintentional plagiarism.
Unintentional plagiarism, on the other hand, involves an individual failing to acknowledge the original author of a work due to a lack of knowledge or inexperience regarding proper citation guidelines. Washington State University provides some examples of unintentional plagiarism as they state, “Misuse of sources might include a lack of understanding of paraphrasing, not being clear about the parameters of common knowledge, and/or the statute of limitations on the attribution of ideas” (Washington State University, 2021). This type of plagiarism tends to be the most common type of academic misconduct as many students are often unaware of proper citation guidelines. With that considered, in the instance of unintentional plagiarism, the individual is not violating academic dishonesty guidelines with clear intent. Therefore, although I believe that punishment is still warranted, the consequences should be less severe than intentional plagiarism.
