I am currently happily married and in a traditional style marriage. However, initially we did not start out that way. I always liked the idea of co-habitation and that is what we originally agreed upon. I was young and wanting to pursue my career while my now husband was working on his. We liked the idea of growing our friendship first and living together to see if we actually did enjoy it. We both realized that we actually did great living together and decided to make larger investments together and blend finances. I did not ever think about marriage and what went with that until we had a conversation about how we actually felt. We both agreed that our faith, values, and goals aligned with a traditional style marriage. I think that as we grew older together, we never really changed, and marriage made no difference in our relationship. I personally don’t think that marriage actually changes anything. I think that happiness comes from yourself first and then you share that with a partner who hopefully is able to reciprocate that back. Relationships and partnerships are what you put into it so it’s important to communicate effectively and make sure you are evaluating your wants and needs. I am very happy and lucky to have a wonderful partner who was emotionally mature enough to understand why he wanted a marriage.
