As discussed in Annotation Suggestions, “reading as a writer” is an active process. It’s much different from passive reading or reading to obtain a general idea or to glean information. When you read as a writer, you pay attention to the choices the author makes to convey their message to their audience in a memorable way (rhetorical choices). This guide will help you to take these first steps with Lahiri’s essay. You will focus on three elements in particular: repetition, the use of metaphor, and specific word choices and phrasing to develop these metaphors. Answer the questions pertaining to each element as instructed below. Be sure to address all questions.
RepetitionFor this element, focus on the element of repetition at the beginning of the essay on pages 9-11 (including the title), where Lahiri provides the context and central focus for her essay: Why Italian? Pay particular attention to the repetition of the title question as well as how Lahiri develops her answer. Specifically, how many times does she ask the question or a form of the question, Why Italian? What information follows each question? Summarize this and then provide a specific example for support. Why do you think she does this? How does it affect your understanding of her circumstances and how does it affect you as a reader? Explain.
MetaphorMetaphor is a common figure of speech used for rhetorical effect—a comparison likening one thing to another (usually very different things) to create a memorable and sensory description for the reader. Lahiri’s essay centers on three metaphors to describe learning and writing in Italian to address the title question. What are the three metaphors that Lahiri uses? Reflect on your experiences learning another language or type of language or anything unfamiliar to you. Do you identify with the metaphors Lahiri provides? Explain and give an example to support your answer. Finally, which of the metaphors had the greatest impact on you as a reader? Explain.
Word ChoiceFor this final element, consult the pages with the metaphor that had the most impact on you. Make a list of the word choices and phrases (1-3 sentences) that were most memorable. Note words that were new to you or that you might not have thought to use in your own writing. Your list should contain five words and two phrases.
