There are a number of different aspects to development. Over the lifespan there are physical changes, neurological and sensory changes, changes in how we come to think about the world around us, changes in how we interact with those around us and changes in how we view ourselves. Ultimately, these all interact as we mature over the course of our lives.
In order to examine and explain all of this a number of different theories of development have emerged. Each focuses on different central themes and what factors are believed to guide the process. While some are concerned with only a specific area, others try to integrate one or more areas.
Everybody has their favorite theory, the one that resonates with what they believe is most important. I’m a big fan of the cognitive approach. But I also see the role of social influence when it comes to development. For this discussion simply talk about the theory (or theories) that makes the most sense to you and why. Cite a few of the main concepts and why you feel they have merit.
After your initial post, respond to another student that chose the same theory as you and another student that chose a different theory. Compare your individual insights regarding the merits of those theories.
