Hello,
I need a 75 word response to the following peers’ discussion post (original question in attachments):

The purpose of research is to discover insights that can improve the human condition. For a researcher’s conclusions to influence the larger academic, social, and policy conversation, there must be trust. I define trust as confidence in a person’s competence, character, and consistency. When a researcher is unethical, trust is damaged – trust in some combination of their character, their competence, or their consistency. As a result, they lose credibility and the ability to influence and/or contribute to important conversations. The other significant implication of unethical behavior is its long-term impact on the research participants. Depending on the ethical infraction, this impact can range from mild to severe. Any negative effects on participants that can be anticipated and prevented must be top of mind for the researcher. All people must be treated with dignity and respect, never as a means to an end (Wellington & Szczerbinski, 2007).
In the field of social justice, ethical concerns include working with vulnerable populations who may not be able to give informed consent; there is a risk of violation of privacy, depending on the researcher’s observation method; and there is a risk of biased, incomplete, or inaccurate interpretation of data, given the complexity of systemic social justice issues, and the limited perspective of the researcher.
Following the research ethics guidelines of Borrett et al. (2017), building ethical considerations into the research proposal is a solid first step to creating an ethical culture in research. The core ethic of “respect for human research participants at all times” (Borrett et al., 2017) guides all other research practices and decisions. I would obtain informed consent from research participants, plan to protect their privacy, give them a chance to review my findings, and engage in the peer review process to invite other perspectives to make the research more robust and more credible.
I have not finalized my specific research topic, but the general topic will relate to the gender gap at the CEO level of organizations. I anticipate that access to a meaningful sample of male and female CEOs may be challenging. I will work with the university librarian to access a database of CEOs so I can get a representative sample. I may also need to narrow my research focus to a specific organization size. Wellington and Szczerbinski (2007) point out that sampling requires a series of choices on the researcher’s part that are informed by the “art of the possible.” Another anticipated challenge is that privacy will likely be a significant concern for the CEOs and the organizations they represent. I plan to develop a privacy statement available to all potential participants. Finally, I will need to be reflexive about my method design and interpretation as a female exploring an issue related to gender and power (Wellington & Szczerbinski, 2007).

Ethical research practices ensure the safeguarding of the rights of human participants, including their autonomy, privacy, and overall well-being. Without these ethical guidelines, research has the potential to harm individuals physically or emotionally, leading to severe consequences both for them and the researchers themselves. Additionally, adhering to ethical principles contributes to the credibility of research findings by promoting transparency, and objectivity throughout the research process.
When conducting research in the realm of social justice, sometimes you can encounter specific ethical concerns, such as power imbalances, cultural sensitivity, and the risk of exploiting populations that are vulnerable. To address these issues effectively, I would approach the research with a deep awareness of its historical and social context. I would also engage with those in affected communitites and prioritize their voices and perspectives in the research process. I would also make sure to include informed consent, and ensure that the research benefits the communities studied rather than exploiting or harming them.
To maintain ethical research practices, I would develop a well-structured research proposal that clearly outlines research objectives, methodologies, and ethical considerations. Anticipated challenges could be obtaining the informed consent, particularly when dealing with participants who have limited resources or when working with sensitive and potentially traumatic data. To overcome these challenges, I would make sure that I have a strong rapport built with my participants. Also providing resources and support if possible.
