Part One:
Based on your reading in Chapter 4 of A Different Mirror, summarize IN OWN WORDS and compare the Choctaw and Cherokee Removals. What were the circumstances that led to their removals? How was the documentation that subjected them to their removals similar or different? Discuss and compare the impact and aftermaths of their removals. Given the relations between Native peoples and the United States at this time, do you feel that “Indian Removal” was, in the words of Andrew Jackson, a means to “protect” Native Americans? Why or why not? Support your analysis using examples raised in the text.
Part Two:
Based on your reading in Chapter 9 of A Different Mirror and your viewing of “In the White Man’s Image,” summarize, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, the rationale and “effectiveness” of Progressive Era policies –- the Dawes Act and Indian Boarding Schools — in their attempts to assimilate Native Americans. Why were these policies created? Do you feel these policies were implemented in the best interests of Native Americans? Why or why not? Support your analysis using examples raised in the text and the film.
Part Three:
Based on your reading of Johnson’s article on Canvas, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, describe at least five examples of Native American activism. Based upon what you saw in the film “We Shall Remain,” what was the rationale behind the Siege of Wounded Knee? Do you feel Native Americans were justified in their actions? Do you believe this event, as well as the events stated in Johnson’s article were effective in improving the conditions of Native Americans? Why or why not? Support your analysis using examples raised in the reading and the film.
The essay must have an introduction and a conclusion.
The essay must be 800 words minimum. Essays under 800 words of text will receive a zero.
The paper must be typed in 12 font in any standard academic font, double-spaced, and have one-inch margins.
You are not to cut and paste from the text and you are not to use outside sources. The essay is to be written in your own words, including any examples from the readings that you use. If you choose to use a direct quote from the readings, it should only be used to back up a point that you are making. Make sure that you cite where in the readings you received your information (e.g. Takaki, p. 15). If you take any information from a source and do not cite it, this is plagiarism. If any plagiarism is detected, the essay grade will be an automatic zero…no exceptions!! You are also to have a work cited page listing the sources used. (This will NOT count toward the 800-word minimum!!)
