“The silence was worse than the rape.” This quote (from the 1991 movie “The Prince of Tides”) provides language for unaddressed trauma and emphasizes the importance of trauma survivors finding a safe place to tell their stories and get help. However, one of the hallmark cluster symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is avoidance of memories, places, smells, and sounds reminiscent of the traumatic event (Sanderson, 2013). Avoidance and numbing are common in people who have experienced trauma so much that avoidance can predict the development of PTSD (Asmundson et al., 2004). Given this data, those on the frontlines must address trauma as early as possible to mitigate the onset of PTSD.
PTSD has been proven to include somatic symptoms and the inability to fight off disease (Hinton et al., 2013). Therefore, PTSD should be treated as a public health crisis. Medical professionals often hinder the process by ignoring the whole body and failing to take time to obtain a complete patient history, including psychiatric events. In the wake, patients often remain silent as they become experts in avoiding. Silence is the problem and will cause many issues for patients who do not receive adequate treatment. Patients with this cluster symptom of avoidance are likely not to seek treatment until an event occurs that mandates psychological intervention. For this author, the inciting event was a complete nervous breakdown with a suicide attempt. Silence was the enemy, and as it turns out, way worse than the trauma.
