Think about the effects your community, culture, family, and peers have had on your development. What did you learn from each system? Take a moment and list five of your deepest, most closely held values. Now, one by one, examine which system(s) taught you that value, which system(s) challenged those values, and, in the face of those challenges, how you felt about yourself as you battled that system.
Reply to Erin I believe that community, culture, family, and peer systems have all impacted my development somehow. For me personally, my family instilled my values in me as a young child. In my family, I was raised that your family sticks together. Regardless of the decisions that some may make, we do not turn our backs on them. Unfortunately, addiction has impacted my family tremendously and affected many members. I have watched my grandmother and my mother struggle with caring for children, grandchildren, and siblings who are well into their adult lives, but because of addiction are unable to live independently. I don’t think I realized until I was impacted personally that not everyone feels this way and not all family members care for those who are suffering from addiction. Our text explains that “The influence of families can range from positive, nurturing, motivating, and empowering to ambivalent, neglectful, odious, and traumatizing” (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2017). I was and still am fortunate in my life to have been surrounded by loving, supporting, and positive parents.
I would say that my peer group also heavily impacted my development when I was an adolescent. I did not always choose the best friend group and found myself in situations that I had no business being a part of. My parents quickly intervened when they realized what was happening. I would say that community has also played a role in my development. I grew up in a small rural town in Kentucky where everyone knew everyone. Although this was a great way to grow up and I still love my small town, I think that it did not prepare me for the outside world in a sense. I come from a place where we trust people and people are good (or so I thought growing up), I learned that this was not true when I went to college and even time that I spent in more urban city areas. I have been told often that I am too trusting of other people and that it could be dangerous. The world has changed and so I talk to my kids now about being safe and not trusting of everyone that they encounter, because not all people are good.
Some of my most deeply held values would include compassion, honesty, respect, dependability, and kindness. These things were also all instilled in me by my family from a very young age. I think that my peer group challenged my values the most. Mostly because I felt pressured to do things that my peers were doing although they went against most of my values.
