This semester, you will choose one research topic about criminology and stick with that topic through the different assignments, which will all build on one another up to the final literature review. The topic must be something related to your discipline about which there is current, ongoing debate or discussion. This week you will take make your first attempt at articulating that topic and research question. Please note, you will continue to refine and revise your topic over the coming weeks.
Be sure to follow all steps of this activity. It is worth 5% of your overall grade.
1. READ: Be sure to have read Chapter 3 of Craft of Research, as well as the Writing Center handout “How to Write a Research Question?” These readings explain how to answer the prompts below. The FAQs document on picking a topic will also help you brainstorm before you begin step 2.
2. DRAFT: Complete the sentences below and post them on the discussion thread; be descriptive but brief.
I am writing on the topic of…
Because I want to find out…
In order to (understand, establish, assess, recommend)…
And the potential practical application is that…
3. RESPOND: Give feedback to TWO classmates in your learning community, including the person who posts their research question right after you, and one other person (look for people who don’t have many comments). You may:
Offer suggestions for specific audiences that might be interested (the goal is for the audience to be professional or academic, so a professional organization might work)
Provide specific suggestions about some of the main arguments and counterarguments that might be relevant to the research interest; or
Suggest possible ways to focus or narrow the scope of the research.
4. REVISE: At the end of the week, after considering the feedback you have received and after having more time to think it over, respond to your own thread with a revised research question. Your final research question should be in the form of a single, specific, question around which there is ongoing debate in your field. (To clarify: you should now move past the original template [I am writing….to find out…] and rewrite it as a concise, focused QUESTION that articulates what you want to investigate.) Please retitle the post “Revised research question.”
*Note – it would be a good idea to do a little preliminary research on you topic before the final wrap up post to make sure it is something viable!
Examples
Example brainstorming draft:
I am writing on the topic of vaccine hesitancy
Because I want to find out why people fail to get vaccines and what information is affecting that choice
In order to understand how public health officials can encourage more people to vaccinate themselves and their children on schedule
The practical application of this is not only for regular childhood vaccine adoption and yearly flu vaccine adoption but to see how we can encourage wide adoption of the coronavirus vaccine.
